OCD is far more than a preference for neatness or organization. It's a serious, often debilitating anxiety condition — and one of the most treatable when approached correctly. You don't have to keep managing it alone.

Understanding OCD

What OCD Actually Is

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition driven by two interlocking experiences: obsessions — unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that cause intense distress — and compulsions — repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to temporarily relieve that distress.

The cycle is self-reinforcing: the compulsion provides brief relief, which teaches the brain that the compulsion is necessary, which makes the obsession return stronger. Over time, the rituals expand and the anxiety worsens. OCD affects approximately 2–3% of the population and is equally common in men and women.

OCD is widely misunderstood. Many people with OCD don't have the stereotypical "contamination and cleaning" presentation. Intrusive thoughts about harm, religious obsessions, relationship OCD, and "pure O" (primarily mental rituals) are just as common — and just as treatable.

Common OCD Symptoms

Intrusive, unwanted thoughts that feel impossible to dismiss
Repetitive checking — locks, appliances, safety
Counting, arranging, or ordering rituals
Excessive cleaning or hand-washing
Mental rituals — reviewing, neutralizing, or reassurance-seeking
Avoidance of triggers to prevent obsessional distress
Significant time lost to obsessions or compulsions daily
Distress, shame, or interference with daily life
OCD Comes in Many Forms

Common OCD Subtypes

OCD isn't one presentation — understanding which subtype you're experiencing helps target treatment more effectively.

Contamination OCD

Fear of germs, illness, or contamination driving excessive cleaning, washing, or avoidance of perceived "dirty" objects or places.

Harm OCD

Intrusive thoughts about accidentally or intentionally harming oneself or others — despite having no desire or intent to do so.

Checking OCD

Repetitive checking of locks, stoves, doors, or actions driven by doubt and fear of catastrophic consequences.

Symmetry & Order OCD

An intense need for objects or actions to feel "just right" — often accompanied by counting or repeating rituals.

Relationship OCD (ROCD)

Obsessive doubt about one's relationship, partner, or feelings — leading to constant reassurance-seeking and mental reviewing.

Pure O (Primarily Obsessional)

Primarily mental obsessions with less visible compulsions — often involving intrusive sexual, religious, or violent thoughts.

Our Approach

How We Treat OCD at Bedre Health

Thorough OCD Evaluation

Your first visit is a 60-minute consultation specifically assessing OCD symptom patterns, triggers, compulsions, and severity — as well as screening for co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety that often accompany OCD.

💊

Medication Management

SSRIs are the first-line medication treatment for OCD and are often prescribed at higher doses than for depression. We select, titrate, and monitor carefully for both response and tolerability. Learn more.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is OCD just about being neat or clean?

No — this is one of the most pervasive misconceptions about OCD. While contamination and cleaning obsessions are one common presentation, OCD manifests in many different forms including intrusive thoughts about harm, religious scrupulosity, relationship doubt, and symmetry concerns. The defining feature of OCD is the obsession-compulsion cycle, not its specific content.

What is ERP and why is it the recommended therapy for OCD?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy designed specifically for OCD. It works by gradually exposing you to obsessional triggers while helping you resist the urge to perform compulsions — breaking the reinforcement cycle. ERP has the strongest evidence base of any psychological treatment for OCD.

Can OCD be treated with medication alone?

Medication — particularly SSRIs — can significantly reduce OCD symptom severity and is an important part of most treatment plans. However, the most durable long-term outcomes combine medication with ERP therapy. We coordinate both components of your care.

Can I receive OCD treatment via telehealth in Massachusetts?

Yes. Bedre Health provides OCD evaluation and medication management via HIPAA-compliant telehealth to patients anywhere in Massachusetts and other licensed states including New Hampshire, Vermont, and Florida.

How is OCD different from anxiety?

OCD and anxiety disorders share some surface-level similarities — both involve distress and avoidance — but OCD has a specific structure: intrusive obsessions followed by compulsive neutralizing behaviors. The treatment approach is meaningfully different, which is why accurate diagnosis matters. OCD often requires higher SSRI doses and ERP-specific therapy, not general anxiety treatment.

How quickly can I get an OCD evaluation appointment?

We typically offer same-week appointments for new patients. No referral is needed to get started.

What insurance do you accept?

Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Point32 (Harvard Pilgrim / Tufts Health), OPTUM, Evernorth, Mass General Brigham Health Plan, and Medicare. We verify your coverage before your first appointment — no billing surprises.
