Mental Health in Adolescence Looks Different

Teen depression doesn’t always look like sadness — it often presents as irritability, withdrawal, academic decline, or physical complaints. Teen anxiety may look like school avoidance, physical symptoms, or perfectionism. ADHD in adolescence carries the accumulated weight of years of academic and social struggle.

Getting the right diagnosis matters enormously at this stage. An incorrect diagnosis — or a missed one — can shape years of a young person’s self-perception and trajectory. We take adolescent psychiatric evaluation seriously.

We involve parents appropriately. Teens deserve confidentiality and a safe space — but parents are important partners in care. We navigate this balance carefully, with explicit conversations about what is and isn’t shared, and how we coordinate with schools and other providers when appropriate.

Our Approach

Adolescent-Specific Psychiatric Care

Developmentally Informed Evaluation

Adolescent psychiatric evaluation requires understanding what’s developmentally normal versus clinically significant — and how symptoms present differently at this stage. We don’t apply adult criteria wholesale to teenagers.

Medication Management When Appropriate

Several medications are FDA-approved for use in adolescents for depression, anxiety, ADHD, and OCD. We prescribe conservatively, monitor closely, and always discuss the risk-benefit picture with both teens and parents. Learn more about our medication management approach.

Therapy Coordination

We work alongside adolescent therapists — CBT, DBT for teens, and play/expressive therapies as appropriate. We help families find the right therapeutic fit and coordinate care across providers.

Family Involvement

We include parents as partners — reviewing findings, discussing treatment plans, and providing psychoeducation. Family therapy referrals are available when family dynamics are part of the clinical picture.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What age do you start seeing patients?

We see patients age 13 and older. For younger children, we’re happy to provide referrals to child psychiatry specialists.

How do I know if my teenager needs psychiatric help vs. just therapy?

A psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner is the right starting point when: symptoms are severe enough to significantly impair school, social, or home functioning; when medication may be appropriate; or when you want a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation before starting therapy. A psychiatric evaluation doesn’t mean medication will be prescribed — it means getting a clear clinical picture first.

Will my teen’s information be kept confidential from me?

Generally yes — adolescents have a right to confidentiality that supports honest therapeutic relationships. We explain clearly to both teens and parents what is and isn’t shared. Exceptions include situations involving risk of harm, which we discuss explicitly at the start of treatment.

Can we do telehealth appointments for my teenager?

Yes. Telehealth is often particularly comfortable for teens, who are accustomed to video communication. Both the teen and parents can join from home, and we can split time between parent and teen portions of the session as clinically appropriate.
