Telehealth psychiatry has transformed mental health access in Massachusetts and New Hampshire — removing the barriers of long commutes, limited in-person availability, and the logistics of seeing a specialist in a healthcare system with significant wait times. If you’ve been considering psychiatric care but haven’t yet made the call, this guide answers everything you need to know before you do.

What Is Telehealth Psychiatry?

Telehealth psychiatry is the delivery of complete psychiatric services — evaluation, diagnosis, medication management, and ongoing care — through secure video connection. It is not a scaled-down version of in-person care. It is the same clinical service delivered through a different medium.

At Bedre Health, telehealth is our primary care model — built intentionally for it, not adapted from an in-person practice as an afterthought. Our patients attend appointments from home, from their cars, from private offices — wherever is private, quiet, and comfortable for them.

Who Telehealth Psychiatry Serves Well

  • People in areas with limited psychiatric access — Much of rural Massachusetts and New Hampshire has significant psychiatrist shortages. Telehealth eliminates geography as a barrier entirely.
  • People with demanding schedules — No commute, no parking, no waiting room. A 30-minute follow-up appointment fits into a lunch break in ways an in-person appointment never could.
  • People with anxiety or social anxiety — The comfort and control of your own environment can make the difference between seeking care and not. Many people with social anxiety or anxiety disorders find telehealth significantly more accessible than in-person care.
  • People managing chronic conditions long-term — Once established in care, telehealth follow-up appointments are the most efficient way to maintain ongoing medication management and monitoring.
  • Parents, caregivers, and people without reliable transportation — Removing the physical logistics of attending appointments removes real barriers for people whose lives have limited flexibility.

Bringing Data to Your Appointment

The more information you can bring to your evaluation, the more productive it will be. Consider tracking for 1-2 weeks before your appointment with our Mood Pattern Discovery Tracker or Stress Pattern Dashboard. Bring: a current medication list (including supplements), names of any previous psychiatric providers, previous psychiatric diagnoses if you have them, and notes on what you’ve tried that helped or didn’t help. The data makes the evaluation more precise and the treatment plan more targeted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need for a telehealth appointment?

A device with a camera and microphone (phone, tablet, or computer), a stable internet connection, and a private, quiet space where you can speak freely. That’s it. We’ll send you the video link before your appointment. No special software download is required for most of our patients.

Can I use my phone for the video appointment?

Yes — most of our patients join on their phones. Portrait or landscape orientation both work. We recommend a stable wifi connection rather than cellular data if possible, but cellular works for most appointments. If your video connection is unstable, we can continue by phone without interrupting the clinical content of the session.

Is telehealth psychiatry HIPAA-compliant?

Yes. We use HIPAA-compliant video platforms with end-to-end encryption. Your session is private, not recorded, and stored only in your clinical record as per standard medical record requirements. We comply with all Massachusetts and federal health privacy regulations.

What if I’m in crisis and need help today?

Bedre Health offers scheduled care — we are not a crisis service. If you are in immediate psychiatric crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), go to your nearest emergency room, or call 911. If you are a current Bedre Health patient with an urgent non-emergency concern, call us directly at (781) 488-6163 and we will do our best to respond quickly or provide appropriate guidance.
